Reply To Dr Khir Toyo On Kg Karuppiah Temple Breaking

Today (28th April, 2008), Malaysiakini reported that former MB of Selangor, Dr Khir Toyo stated that the Kg Karrupiah Temple (referred to by some as Rimba Jaya Temple or Padang Jawa Temple) breaking was ordered by MIC President Dato Seri S.Samy Vellu and that the temple was broken after Deepavali. This is my letter in reply to the editor of Malaysiakini.

To the Editor of Malaysiakini,

How could Dr. Mohd Khir Toyo say that the temple was broken two days after Deepavali? It was broken a week BEFORE Deepavali. Did the whole nation get it wrong? Or were all the reports and pictures in ALL the three Tamil Dailies of the broken temple, lies? Perhaps the former MB was referring to remnants of the temple structure that was left standing or the ‘temporary temple’ ‘rebuilt’ at the same site by some quarters after the initial breaking. However the Kg Karuppiah Maha Mariamman Temple as we know it was broken on the 30th October, 2007.

I was there on that day. The MBSA made the first attempt to break the temple in the morning around 9.00 am. They were stopped by the residence there and Shah Alam MIC Committee members. MBSA Officers then said that the temple will be broken by 12 noon and all the deities were to be removed by then. A number of youths began to gather at the temple site in an attempt to prevent the temple breaking.

MBSA kept to their word and made a charge around noon but was ordered to be stopped by the police as it turned violent. In the meantime fellow lawyer, Mr Sivanesan and me demanded MBSA to show that they had the authority to break the temple. The MBSA legal officer was called to the site but was unable to show a court order that specified that the temple be broken. He then resorted to a notice by MBSA. Upon inspection the notice was dated two years ago. We argued on the validity of the notice but the Legal Officer held his ground. A plea that the matter be referred to court to resolve ambiguity before the temple is broken also fell into deaf ears.

The Shah Alam Dato Bandar was there. He said he has his instructions and refused to budge. This was despite Mr Alex Thiagarajan (Klang MIC Chairman) telling the Dato Bandar that the temple breaking will have dire consequences for the BN government. The Dato Bandar gave the orders and ‘disappeared’ from the site. This was when MBSA made the final charge. Some youths were injured whilst others were arrested in the process. Some MBSA officers were also injured. With the youths that barricaded themselves between the MBSA officers and the temple removed, the bulldozer moved in.

The picture of the damaged the yellow structure shown in Malaysiakini’ s report is that of the temple’s ‘Mulla Staanum’ or inner sanctum. It is the most sacred place in the temple and the statute of the main deity is placed there in accordance with rites dating back thousands of years. Once the inner sanctum was damaged, the temple committee had no choice but to remove the statute of the main deity as they didn’t want the statute to be desecrated. All Hindus know that once the statute of the main deity is removed from the temple, the place ceases to be a temple.

Therefore the temple was broken on the 30th October, 2007. To say otherwise runs counter to irrefutable facts.

Why does Khir toyo only reveal this contreversial issue know after being hit by Dato Seri?

The dates are wrong,

Why would a state M.B want or need to follow Dato Seri's so called instruction ? He is the leader of the state including Indians

This raises suspicion on the credibility of Khir"s statement

Khir Toyo vying for the umno youth post in coming party election but his performance is very bad at state level, and his chances to win are very slim at present. So he need to look for the scape goat to boost his image.

Definitely he is talking nonsense, the real issue is, the 1st demolition which was done a week before the Deepavali and he failed to talk about that unless his aide has given him a wrong info. But then if his aide gave him wrong info, supposedly by now he should received the right picture from the intelligence. He keep on harping on second demolition which was done after the deepavali. The second demolition was the removal of the temporary structure which was built by the local Hindus.

Once the main deity removed then it's not a temple any more and so what is the point for him to talk about the 2nd demolition. Who ordered the second demolition is not important but the first demolition which was done in barbarian way is the issue to discussed.

Damage has been done by Khir and he should re-look his decision and learn from mistake.

dear mr murugesan,

thank you for bringing to light the confusion/lies relating to Toyo "revelation"

honestly, you're wasted in MIC - please consider championing community issues with Pakatan Rakyat or at least as an independent.

god bless and good luck :-)

im madhavan and being a resident of padang jawa myself, i would like to make some points.

1 : why there was no official notice/letter stating the temple should be taken down on 30th oct ?

2 : IF DS Samy Velu gave instruction to take down the temple, why does khir toyo have to take instruction from DS Samy Velu to brake the temple ? On which authority did Samy Velu give the instruction to take down the temple ? Can Khir toyo answer this questions ?

3 : if temple was not taken down on 30th oct, what were MBSA men doing inside the temple on 30th oct ? (refer to MKINI and tamil newspaper)

4 : why there was no proper negotiation done prior to temple braking ?

5 : the temple was taken down while there was a prayer going on. based on what rational decision did you allow the temple braking while a prayers going on ?

To Murugesan : you tried hard. thanks for that. but the fact is, the temple was torn down, in a very bad manner. we, the people of rimba jaya had lot of memories on the temple. and to see it being torn down in barbaric manner is not something anyone wants to see.

please make sure that this event doesnt occur again in the future.

En Hamzah,

Thank you for your invitation but no thanks. Don't get me wrong, I think all of us are genuinely working towards making this nation great. We might have different ideas as to the how but our ultimate aim is the same. We have good people at both sides fighting with the interest of the nation at heart. Let me be on this side Sir. Take care and all the best to you too. :-)

Dear Mr Madhavan,

Yes I was heart broken too when the temple was finally torn down. As time went by that day, I really thought we would be able to stop the teardown of the temple as that was my experience from previous such incidents. You have some valid questions to which I too would like to get some answers. Take care.

well we do know that since the days of the incident sir. No matter what they may say of blogs n net, most bloggers do have etiquette and they do dig real gud info ;)

when the temple went down days b4 deepavali..it was rightly mentioned that DatukSeri did ask Khir to stop the demolition, which Khir refused. The incident was only openly disclosed recently , but blogs had it reported monhts ago. hehehe. :)
( refer http://www.bmahendran.com/?p=190 )

the indian makkals know that Khir is the culprit, and we will not be taken by his arrogant behaviour, of twisting the facts and trying to fool the rakyat.

Khir must realise, he lead a loosing team in Selangor and he, Khir Toyo was the sole cause for that lost.
