Just a "Small" Matter of Temple Breaking

About three weeks ago Ampang Jaya Municipal Council demolished the Sri Maha Kaliamman Temple at Kampung Tasek Tambahan. There was a total blackout on the incident for more then a week... and then the facts started to trickle in and PKR's house of cards began to fall.

First, there is Anwar's famous election slogan "Kerajaan BN roboh kuil. Kalau Pakatan tubuh kerajaan, kita akan bina kuil!". There was much applause and shouts of support whenever those words were uttered. Pakatan managed to from state governments in Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor in part due to such promises.

How many temples have you built PKR? None, but you have already demolished a temple!

PKR 1, Indian Community 0.

Then there was a fervent attempt to hush up the whole temple demolition episode. A Malaysian Nanban reporter that went to the site a few days after the demolition was threatened and told not to publish the news. He was also told that "Makkal Sakti" will demonstrate in front of their office if the news is published.

Interesting how anyone can claim to represent "Makkal Sakti" and threaten almost anyone with it. The temple committee itself did not raise the issue as they were Pakatan supporters. So much for transparency and openness promised before the election.

PKR 2, Indian Community 0.

Dr Xavier criticized MPAJ and washed his hands by saying that the state government had no knowledge about it. What happened to the much promised accountability during the campaign?
PKR 3, Indian Community 0.

He was also quick to point out that MIC is politicising the issue. Politicising the issue? Hello, can Dr Xavier say with confidence that PKR would have formed the state government if not for the Kg Karuppiah Temple (Padang Jawa) demolition this time last year? It was not politics then but it is politics now! Yes, right! Its is politics when its convenient for them!
PKR 4, Indian Community 0.

Dr Xavier went on to split hairs on the issue by saying that it was a "shrine" and not a "temple". According to him the temple had no permit and was on state land. Since when they started to make such distinctions? Since winning the election and forming the state government?

In that case can Dr Xavier point to one temple (or even a "shrine" for that matter) that was properly registered and built on its own land but subsequently broken by the BN government? Didn't Pakatan stoke the fire of discontent and rode to power on those sentiments? Why the double standard?

PKR 5, Indian Community 0.

The person that took the cake in this whole episode must be the Ampang MP, YB Zuraida Kaamaruddin. According to her, the temple was not broken by MPAJ but by the temple committee itself for renovation works. She must have said it in confidence that the pro Pakatan Temple Committee Members would back-up her spin. And they did by their silence! How insulting!

And what a mess they left behind when they "broke the temple for renovation!" The temple committee must have been in one big hurry as they broke the temple without removing the 'soolam' that was at the centre of worship and left the temple in one big rubble . Her statement is in direct conflict with the admission by MPAJ, Dr Xavier and YB Manikavasagam.

What does she think we are? Idiots? Instead of admitting as to what went wrong, here we have an MP who is trying to lie and spin a new story. To be fair, we can't totally blame her as we have been buying all PKR's spin so far.

PKR 6, Indian Community 0.

For those readers who would like to point out BN's poor track record when it comes to handling of the temple issue, let me save everyone's time by admitting that YES, we do have a poor record! And we paid a heavy price for it.

The previous BN state government attempted to impose the 'legality' on the temple issue with an iron fist and were shown the way out by the voters. We too, at MIC paid dearly for our failure to stop certain demolitions.

However, MIC and in particular the Youth Wing have always fought when it came to temples, even if it was against our own government. T. Mohan had demonstrated before this (much to the displeasure and anger of the former MB, YAB Dato Seri Khir Toyo and the late MIC State Exco YB Dato Sivalingam) in front of the SUK in protest of temple breaking in Puchong. I was there with my Shah Alam MIC Youths fighting our own enforcement officers against the breaking of the Kg Karrupiah Temple last year.

T.Mohan in particular and the MIC Youths in general had fought against and managed to stop many temple demolitions. Not many know about these stories because 'saved' temples are not hot issues. None of the temples saved (or those demolished) had the proper papers. But fight we did.

When it comes to temples, it is not a matter of legality but rather of prudence and care. BN ignored it and was handed its heaviest electoral loss ever. Now its Pakatan's turn and they are trying spin their way out of it.

"You can fool all people some of the time
and you can fool some people all the time
but you can never fool all people all the time".

SELAMAT HARI RAYA
MAAF ZAHIR BATIN!

They politicized and spread rumors,(even sms's) am sure you found lies being spread in the constituent you were standing in the past election...this is their game. So i personally have no respect wat so ever for the leaders from the other spectrum.

They are supposedly for all races...a chinese will fight for an indian or a malay would fight for an indian it seems.
But where are they now?..I really don't see a malay or a chinese rep from pakatan rakyat coming to the indians aid...

Such hypocrisy...and yet they have the cheek to call our PM flip flop, while their big boss is spinning the biggest wheel in town...

Dear All,

I agree with Dravid as I myself have read, heard and seen the spin that PKR has concocted. What’s really amusing is that a lot of people are buying into it and even regurgitating it. This is a bizarre phenomenon and I can only deduce that these people are blinded not by their faith in God but their pride; covering up for making wrong decisions. Many of PKR’s supporters realize the spin but their stupid arrogance gives them the impetus to support PKR or fear loosing their foolish faces.

As for Annuar’s quote “Kerajaan BN roboh kuil. Kalau Pakatan tubuh kerajaan, kita akan bina kuil.” Annuar will say what ever it takes to further his own personal agenda. Remember the Sri Raja Raja Madurai Veeran temple in Kampung Rawa, Penang?? Annura did say and I reiterate he did indeed say that “no temple bells will be sounded in Penang!” If the Indian community there do not accept the governments plan to move the site of the temple to Jalan SP Chelliah. All because it was adjacent to a mosque which by the way was built way after the temple was.

Why not move the mosque?? The Malays beat up our 11 year old becase they were enraged by our bell ringing in the temple, we retaliate by beating up their 14 year old and who gets expelled???

Well, Annuar Ibrahim will say and do anything to advance his own scheme, I wont be surprised if, when he finally looses his grip, he turns around and wants to merge with Barisan quipping that for the greater good of the nation!!!!

What will our Indian community say??? They will again foolishly agree and be sucked into the spin as they are now. Then where will we be? Back to square one and all will be happy because nothing would have changed.

This brings me to the ultimate question; What has really changed with the Indian Community in the states that PKR is now ruling??? NOTHING!!

Krish

Dear Muru,

What a lovely long article??

I wonder where were you and the MIC youth gang when the BN govt demolished more than 300 temples in which some temples were more than century old?????

Apa wayang lah oi?

Here a small temple, 19 years old and you guys are out for cheap publicity.

I think this is also "MIC punya kerja" like what Khir Toyo said earlier that MIC cleared all the temples to be demolished.

Pleaseee man...... habis modal ke?

(*) and i know you will not allow this message to be on your comments....... biasalah MIC...

Dear Maraan,

First of all be man enough to put your own picture instead of hiding behind the picture of an endangered species. If you don't, then you really don't "Matter". Perhaps you are trying to reinforce the Home Ministry's allegation of Hindraf's link with the tigers?

Secondly, where did you get the figure 300? From the doctored videos by Hindraf that passed off the breaking of a few temples as 3000? Maybe you should consult Dr Xavier. He will categorize it for you as "Shrines" and "Temples". While he is at it, maybe he will also enlighten you as to how many of those temples were different from the one broken by BN (ie, had own land and proper papers.)

So according to you since this is a small and relatively new temple, PKR were justified in breaking it? Bravo! Why didn't you, PKR or Hindraf make such a distinction before the election? Is it because we are "Indians after all" and it is convenient to put all the blame on an Indian Party?

Your comments just reinforces what I wrote that the opposition took opportunity to play up the temple issue when it benefited them politically but now chose to ignore it by claiming its a small matter.

With people like you around, their job of misleading Indians is made that much easier. Keep it up!

The temple was demolished - it's fact and do not justify for the sake of politics. Temple will not exist without Shrine and please no illogical justifications. But then, the state government was not in denial syndrome about the demolishment. They acted fastly by suspending the second man in council pending investigations and promised the rebuiling.

The actions was totally different from previous government who was in denial syndrome and even until today denying and worst scenario was putting a total blame on third party.

Let's put politics out of religion issues. No matter, Hindu or Chinese temple, Church, Mosque or even Surau do not demolish without proper process. Learn from past mistakes.

Mr. Maaran, the tiger...

I see you are a very articulate person...with much research and statistics being thrown into your article....where the hell you got the numbers la 'machi'? guess this would be the tone of which i should speak to you..only then it might reach that 'thing' on top of your face...

People like you, and many more indians tend to throw allegations without much basis to it...If you have the time, please go to the nearest temple to where you live and ask them if ever MIC helped them out...

why go far, just ask around your relatives..of course not your age group of 18 n below...but say someone who is in their 30's and above...am sure you will find someone, whos life has changed with the intervention of MIC...i personally know many whom have had problems solved..education /financials..Start thinking and stop being an empty can,too much noise.. (Siapa habis modal...you dah habih otak la)

Raveendran, I like you would love to separate religion from politics.... alas this the real world and in Malaysia religion and politics are synonymous.

Since there is a call to separate politics and religion, can we put hypocrisy out as well? When it’s convenient for PKR and its supporters, we should separate politics and religion. However, pre elections, I recall clearly how PKR was openly lauding religious for their own benefit .

Since it’s only proper that religion and politics should be separate, why not challenge PKR to change the constitution? After isn’t this amalgamation vested in our constitution?

Its strange that we don’t here the Malays and the Chinese calling for politics and religion to be separate!

Vanakam Bro Rajan.

Put politics out of religion not means, religion will be push aside to foreshore but do not used the religion for the sake of political support. When religious issues in center of town, don't take a decision with the politics as a yardstick. Some bigots believe if they supress other religion then he/she will be able to gain more political support within his/her religion community which has backfired in last GE.

Religion and politics are synonymous in Malaysia for some level only not in overall political scenario. If your allegations was true in total then PAS should have win the heart of Malay Muslims long time ago but the reality was PAS never win any state out of Kelantan and Terengganu. Bear in mind PAS lost the Terengganu and almost Kelantan in 2004 GE. Even after the last GE, PAS managed to have an-extra parliament and state seat with the support of non-muslim's community. Otherwise forget it.

I agree with you, we need to out do the "hypocrisy" as well. The change must start within us otherwise we can't expect to see the changes.

"Why not challenge PKR to change the constitution?" Ooopss, I'm odinary citizen without any political power to put pressure against the "PM in waiting" but at this moment even the existing rulling party have no power to amend the constitution since they lost their 2/3 grid. For me the best government is the one without the 2/3 power and this is the democratic check and balance process. Since this is the first time bn lost their 2/3 power after 1969 election, it's look a bit mess but definitely later become norm.

[For your information even in 10 Mei 1969 GE, the then Perikatan didnt lost their 2/3 power in reality because the election for sabah n sarawak was conducted in different time frame. Perikatan in Semenanjung lost to opposition but later when the ballot counted in Sabah and Sarawak, Perikatan was put back to government position with 2/3 power]

One thing for sure, I have decided in next election, I will vote for "MALAYSIAN POLICY" even if the candidate is someone who I trust but representing the party which fail to produce and implement a policy for all Malaysian.

Strange? Are you sure the chinese and malays didn't call for the separation? Or you have no source on the information since the media only report the good news from rulling party.

Mr Muru,

good job you have done. nice lovely article. yes we admit that !st temple was demolish under PR rulling state. i feel sad too because im a PR suppoter.

well maybe their campaign was sound like that that PR promise wont demolis any temple. dont worry we indians can wait another 5 years and teach them. its just a matter of time.

Mr.Muru, but im totaly dissappoint wit you. Still remember your campaign in campus election in 2005 at UM. 2nd college arrange a function which attended by Mr.Kamala and youself. that day i salute both of with you speech. i still remember you words.

that time i dont know that politic party shouldn't come in campus and campaign for any party. but MIC did as well other BN party. thats not the issue here.

in the fuction you say 'i'll do anything for indians and will die for indians!! MIC is the sole party who can fight for indians with the government!!!' what a great lie that i never realise that time. where were MIC when so many temple demolished in selangor when BN rule and where were you when our 5 HINDRAF member been arrested under ISA.

shouldn't you in front of them and die for indians when all this happen??? why never do that? well now i believe MIC people can talk big in blogs and among our community only. if MIC realy fight for indians you are the 1 who should be in the front line when our temple demolished and stop police from arrest HINDRAF people.

if you have done that, than i salute you becouse keep your words and accept MIC is the only worrior for indians.

but all that never happen and your speech just a political drama to cheat young indians in universities!!!! im realy feel pity for them. yet again you going to cheat them with you lovely nice words!!!!

you can critisise me for anything. i just dont bother. i just feel want tell you about youself. i dont care what ever you wants to say about me. TC.

Dear Indian84,

I remember coming to UM's second college but I dont remember coming there in my capacity as a MIC member or a politician. I have donated some money for their functions as a lawyer. Be that as it may, lets come to your allegations.

As I have always maintained, you are entitled to your own opinion and I am not here to convince you otherwise. However, the 'facts' upon which you have based your opinion must be true.

First of all, its wrong of you to say that I or MIC wasn't there when temples were broken. We were there fighting against demolitions both in the open and behind closed doors. We Indians only see the fault of the government when a temple is broken but how many of us have the courage to speak against our own people for indiscriminate temple building and not following the rules?

I WAS THERE FIGHTING when the Kampung Karuppiah Temple was broken, so were my MIC brothers from Shah ALam and Hindu Sangam. Remember the 14 youths arrested after the temple was broken? Who went to court for them and secured their release? I was the lawyer on record and MIC Youth was there fighting for their release. We had the money ready to post their bail. We didn't collect money under their name and kept it for ourselves. I can say with conviction and a clear conscience that I was there fighting. Can you?

As for the Hindraf 5 detained, its funny people want us to fight for their release and at the same time want MIC to keep its hand off the matter. Remember, Hindraf said MIC was irrelevant and was UMNO's dog. Its an irony that their supporters are upset that MIC didn't fight hard enough to fend off their ISA detention.

Indian84, you can keep your respect and reserve your salute for someone else. I know all such things are transient and fleeting. Just open your eyes and see things as they are. Don't let your anger cloud your judgment. You take care too.

Well said Mr. Murugesan, well said indeed!!!!

I for one can say that you have my support and respect. I have seen and heard many trying to talk you out of MIC and many more questioning your commitment. Yet you were and still are resolute in your dedication to our community.

We need more people like you not the thugs who tarnished the names of MIC and not the minions who are just being used by Anwar Ibrahim to achieve his goal.

Good luck to you;

All my support and respect

Vanakam Bro Raveendran,

As you very have very well displayed , the facts speak for themselves. But let’s not concede humility when it’s convenient and say we are powerless. Are we only vociferous in the blogging specter? Hey, didn’t the past election results teach us anything?

No where in the world are political parties divided by race and in this country we take it even further. Even in the most menial forms we fill up, we are asked our race and religion. This segregation is entrenched in our very system. These are not allegations, these are facts!

Let’s fight to do away with this and the rest will fall in its just place (including temples) regardless of the majority.
